Online bingo is another of the fastest-growing games on the internet. Like its live counterpart, players have the opportunity to win vast sums of cash as the jackpots in some games reach spectacular levels. The game’s relative ease and the social element involved make it a very popular game indeed. And contrary to many beliefs, it’s not only blue-haired grannies that play bingo these days. Walk into any major bingo hall nowadays, and you will find a complete cross-segment of society: the young and the old, male or female. They all have one thing in common, and that is the dream of winning that tremendous jackpot and calling out “Bingo!”
The History of Bingo
The game of Bingo is said to have originated sometime in the 16th century in Italy, as an early form of the lottery. It spread first to France and by the 1700s Beano – as it was first called – was being played throughout the continent. In Germany it was first used as the educational tool which today has become standard in many schools around the world. Bingo has etched its way into the collective mindset of cultures everywhere.
In the early 1990s, Bingo made its way to the United States, where it eventually underwent the name-change from Beano to Bingo. It is believed that a man with a winning card mistakenly shouted out “Bingo!” and the new name stuck. Since then it has gone on to be one of the most popular games in the country (and, a term used to describe a variety of situations!).
Due to the fact that Bingo is at heart a game of chance, many people dispel the notion that any kind of strategy which will improve your chances of winning exists. This is true to an extent, but the laws of probability also suggest that there are actually some things one can do to gain an edge, however slight it may be.
On a typical Bingo card there are 24 numbers. The sample from which the winning numbers are drawn is 75. This means that over time there will be a balanced selection of high/low and odd/even numbers. 37.5 is the mean (or average number) so every ball drawn over time will essentially create a balanced set of numbers, or take one step closer to attaining that balance.
So what can you do to increase your chances of winning? When you are selecting your cards, try to choose one with an even-looking distribution. A card which is compatible with the laws of probability will be more likely to be a winner. Imagine a card which shows 11, 12, 13, 14, and 15 down the B column. The random selection of the balls means that this is completely possible and otherwise just as likely as any other combination, but the laws of probability tell you that this type of thing does not occur very often. Of course, Bingo cards are often selected with the laws of probability in mind, but in some versions of the game you are able to select your own number, and this type of thing should then be considered.
